1982 WORLD CUP

1982 WORLD CUP DRAW ERROR

This error arose due to the arrangements to keep the South American nations apart. Argentina were the seeded team in Group 3 and Brazil in Group 6. The first pot to be drawn featured Scotland, Northern Ireland, Belgium, France, Peru and Chile. To prevent Peru and Chile being drawn with their South American neighbours it was agreed that the first two European nations drawn would be allocated to Group 3 (with Argentina) and Group 6 (Brazil). Belgium were the first nation drawn but were mistakenly placed in Group 1 with Italy. Scotland were drawn next and bizarrely placed in Group 3 with Argentina (as Belgium should have been). When Scotland were drawn, FIFA officials realised the error and placed Belgium in Group 3 and Scotland in Group 6 as would have been the case if the original mistake not been made.

MYTH: It is often erroneously reported in various media that FIFA altered the draw procedure to prevent Scotland having to play Argentina in light of the Falklands Conflict. This is an interesting proposition that would imply FIFA had the use of time travelling or clairvoyant technologies as the draw was conducted on 16th January 1982, whilst the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands did not occur until 2nd April 1982 which was largely an unforeseen event outwith secret intelligence circles.
